1975 340/S Restoration

When I got the sled it was completely stripped down, with not even one rivet left
in place, but it was mostly complete.   The original tank cover was even in pretty good shape.
It also had an extra track and skis.  The guy I bought it from had it mostly stripped

already and started working on the fiberglass belly pan. The tunnel
was in perfect shape except one spot were a cleat had come loose and poked a
hole behind the fuel tank in the top part of the tunnel.  After a little grinding you
could hardly see were the hole was.

After spending half a day playing with paint colors, we finally got an almost perfect match by
matching the paint with the back side of the foot rest.  If we would have added
a sprinkle more black in the paint, it would have been right on, but at
300.00 dollars for a half gallon, I was starting to loose my patience and my
wife was starting to give me that evil eye.   I had told her it would only take
me two weeks to get done :).  After painting every green piece and laying
them out, it started coming back together and after four weeks, the body was done.

Now on to the motor.  The guy that had it before me said it ran, so I ripped the
motor down for new rings, gaskets, and seals.  The pto side piston was junk
because of a misshapen exhaust port.  It lifted the ring way up but did not hurt the jug.  After machining the jug, I installed one new piston with rings on the pto side.  The other side got new rings, and the motor was put back together with new gaskets and seals.

The next night I put the motor in and aligned the clutches.  I then took the carbs out
of the cooker and replaced the needle and seats, installed new carb boots, and
adjusted the choke and throttle cables.  I added about a gallon of gas, primed
the lines and in two pulls she ran great.

I put as many N.O.S. parts on it as I could find.  From the skis on back there was a lot of little items that I had to dig for like the black plastic windshield screws and the rubber grommets that
hold the coil bracket to the motor.  Luckily all the other brackets were there
and in good shape.

I bought a dual fill tank along with a new cover
and also an N.O.S. windshield and tank cover for the original tank.  I already had the correct gas caps here that say "premium fuel only".  I was going to install the dual fill tank but I'm still searching for something to
plug the hole in the hood that would look good. Anyway The sled is done
after 5 weeks from 6pm to 2am. - Mark
